Q&A: How do I start a career in fitness?

Question by Karen H: How do I start a career in fitness?
I am making a career change, from law to fitness. Fitness has been a lifelong passion of mine. As a kid, I skied (and taught skiing), danced (and taught dance), and ran. As an adult, I go to the gym 5 times a week; I do cardio, lift weights, go to classes, swim. I worked at a Y for a while, directing a youth fitness program (unfortunately the Y doesn’t pay well enough). I have some Y certifications, and a BA that is totally unrelated to fitness (in economics), so I’m basically starting out from scratch. I don’t know exactly what kind of career in fitness I might like to pursue… what are the options? I am looking for any and all starter tips. Classes, certifications, books, DVDs, websites/forums… anything to get my new career path started. Also, feel free to email me if you have lots of advice or if you think you can help/mentor. Thanks!

Q&A: Are protein supplements really effective in weight training or is it a byproduct form the dairy industry?

Question by Tom: Are protein supplements really effective in weight training or is it a byproduct form the dairy industry?
I have heard mixed things about protein for weight training. One source says it is a nutrient poor byproduct from the dairy industry. If protein supplements are worthwhile, what kind should is the best, I have heard of whey and caseo types– are there any others? Does blood type play a role (as claimed by one brand)? Do you have a brand recommendation?

The only thing that matters in an effective protein drink, while trying to gain weight, is the amount of calories, carbs, and protein it has in it. There are plenty protein powers out there that are high in protein,carbs, and calories and those are the ones that work best for me. I notice speeded recovery time when I take protein drinks after my workouts. I do not think the protein-type matters that much to be honest. I think the protein serving is what really matter(how many grams of protein in a serving). I have also read that after intense lifting, free radicals(cell-damaging invaders) run rapid in your body. A protein drink usually has amino acids and antioxidants in it to eliminate the free radicals. Cytogainer is a great protein supplement that you should consider.
